Why we make it

What we want.

Film that looks like film

A negative is not a raw file. NegaKit reads the film base, the stock and how it was developed, and converts the way a good print would — not the way a generic editor guesses.

The darkroom beside the picture

The roll card holds the film, the speed you shot it at and the developer. 35mm.org adds the maker’s times, datasheet and reciprocity data — and what you learn from your rolls flows back.

Private by default

The AI tools run on your Mac. Your photographs never leave it unless you choose to share them.

What it does

From the scanner to the print.

Every option, before and after ›

Scan

  • Scan straight into a roll and watch each frame arrive as a positive.
  • Infrared dust removal, multi-sampling, focus check and sensor calibration.
  • Works with your scanner software or camera scans; batch through holder after holder.

Convert and develop

  • Colour negative, black-and-white and slide film, converted from the film base up.
  • Film profiles, tone curves, colour grading, zones and split-grade printing.
  • Presets and camera looks, or match the look of any photo you like.

Repair and finish

  • Dust, scratches and hairs found and filled; heal, crop and straighten.
  • Local adjustments with brushes, gradients and masks found for you.
  • Versions and multiple exposures from any frames on the roll.

AI on your Mac

  • Click to select anything, remove and fill, depth effects, colourise and enlarge.
  • An assistant that suggests edits, judges the roll and writes captions.
  • Everything runs on this Mac: your photographs never leave it.

The darkroom

  • A roll card for each roll: film, speed, camera, lens and developer.
  • Developing timer with baths in order, corrections and agitation cues.
  • Expired, pushed and pulled film; long exposures from the maker’s reciprocity data.

Print and share

  • Export recipes that write several files per frame; print and contact sheets.
  • Share rolls as galleries and post frames to the 35mm feed.
  • Report how a roll came out, so the reference learns from real rolls.

Presets

Looks for every film.

Nearly eighty built-in looks on shelves by purpose, previewed on your own frame. Camera looks, darkroom prints and toners — and looks other photographers shared on 35mm for the film you shot.

Installing

  1. 1 Open the download Open the .dmg file from your Downloads folder.
  2. 2 Move it to Applications Drag NegaKit into the Applications folder.
  3. 3 Open it the first time macOS asks before opening an app from outside the App Store. If it says it can’t check NegaKit, open System Settings → Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway. You only do this once.

A 35mm account is optional: it keeps your settings and presets in sync and connects the roll cards to 35mm.org.

Testers

Become a tester.

Help shape NegaKit with your own rolls. Testers get new versions first, a direct line to us, and a say in what comes next.

  • You get. Early versions before everyone else, and answers from the people who make it.
  • We ask. Develop a few rolls a month in NegaKit and tell us what worked and what didn’t.
  • Who we look for. Every kind of scanning and film: flatbeds, film scanners, camera scans; colour, black and white, slide.

    NegaKit and 35mm, together

The app and the reference now work as one: what you know about a film is on the roll card, and what you learn from your rolls goes back to 35mm.org.

    With 35mm.org

    • Post frames to the 35mm feed, developed as edited, with the film, camera, lens and developer from the roll card.
    • Report how a roll came out: the measured density and the speed you shot at go to the film’s page.
    • The film’s reviews and stars on the roll card — rate and review it without leaving the app.
    • Datasheets, rated speeds and the maker’s advice on developers, right on the roll card.
    • Long exposures: metered seconds turned into the time to expose, from the maker’s reciprocity data.
    • Your 35mm gear and favourite films come first in the roll card’s pickers.
    • Shared galleries can appear as samples on the film’s page; community looks made for your film come first.
    • Film identification learns from scans shared on 35mm.
    • One sign-in, and a 35mm window with activity on your posts, news and your shooting log.

    Editing

    • Each frame can have its own film, look and style; copy settings from the first selected frame.
    • More natural colour when colourising, with a choice of three colour models.

    AI on your Mac

    • Settings → AI models shows each model’s size, licence and whether this Mac can run it.
    • Remove and fill, click to select anything, and culling with Apple Vision.
  2. 0.10.1

    Clearer progress

You can see what NegaKit is busy with.

    • The status bar names the job that is running.
  3. 0.10.0

    Curves and a second opinion

A deeper tone curve, and the assistant helps where the automatic tools are unsure.

    Tone

    • Tone curve: slide the ends to set black and white points, type values, use region sliders, or curve lightness only.

    AI on your Mac

    • A second opinion on which way up, for frames auto rotate isn’t sure about.
    • Depth effects: lens blur and haze by distance.
    • Revive faded colour, and enlarge for print when a frame is short of the print resolution.
    • Alt text and captions for the whole roll.

    Working

    • Every long job runs in the status bar and can be cancelled.
