Leica's first digital M. An 18 × 27 mm CCD sits behind the same bayonet the film bodies use, so every M lens mounts and every one of them frames 1.33× tighter than it does on film. The shutter is a vertically travelling metal blade unit reaching 1/8000 s — faster than any film M — and the meter reads light reflected off a bright blade in the first shutter curtain.

Remarques
The infrared filter over the sensor is weak, and black synthetics photographed purple as a result. Leica supplied two UV/IR cut screw-in filters free to every buyer and on request to existing owners. A 6-bit code in the bayonet identifies a current Leica lens to the body, which corrects that lens's vignetting in firmware. Two figures need stating. Leica prints the sensor as 10.5 megapixels, but the pixel dimensions on the same page — 3936 × 2626 — come to 10.3, which is what Wikipedia, dpreview and camera-wiki all give and what is recorded here. And 32 s is reached only in aperture priority: the manual dial stops at 4 s, with B for anything longer.
