Emulsion

The light-sensitive layer of a film: tiny crystals of silver halide held in gelatin.

The emulsion is coated on a transparent base. Colour films have several emulsion layers, each sensitive to a different colour of light. Sometimes “emulsion” is used loosely for the film stock itself, as in “same emulsion, different name” for a respool.
