Film base
The clear, flexible support that carries the emulsion.
Films are made on a base of cellulose triacetate or of polyester. The base is not light-sensitive, but a coloured or dark layer on or in it may be there to stop halation. Polyester is the stronger and more stable of the two; triacetate is the traditional base.
