Halation

A glow around bright highlights, caused by light passing through the emulsion and bouncing back off the base or the camera back.

The reflected light exposes the emulsion a second time, around the bright spot. Films carry an antihalation layer to absorb it, which is dissolved or removed during development. Films sold without the backing show the effect strongly.
