Exposure and shooting

Light meter

An instrument, built into the camera or separate, that measures light to suggest an exposure.

A reflected-light meter reads the light bouncing off the subject, and an incident-light meter reads the light falling on it. Either is set to the film’s speed — the box speed or your chosen exposure index — to give the shutter speed and aperture.
