Zone System
A method of controlling exposure and development, devised by Ansel Adams and Fred Archer, that divides the tones of a scene into zones.
The tonal range is split into eleven zones from black to white, numbered 0 to X. The photographer places a chosen area on a chosen zone by exposure and then adjusts development to control the highlights. It was developed for sheet film but its ideas are used with roll film too.
