Exposure and shooting

Overexposure

Giving the film more light than it needs for the result you want.

On negative film it produces a dense negative, which holds shadow detail but can lose highlight detail and print with more grain. On slide film it washes out highlights. A little overexposure is generally better tolerated by negative film than the reverse.
